Webcams of the Grand Massif ski area can be seen on the Grand Massif website below. The long photo above is a picture of the top of the Lanche chair from Morillon on January 28th 2009 mid morning. From this webcam you can see both the ski slopes of Morillon and Samoens. If you can ski in low season it is definitely the best time to go to the Grand Massif with few queues and for the last 5 years glorious weather and snow. Even late in the season there can be plenty of fresh snow for ski ing. Both in late March 2008 and 2009 (this scene is off the Morillon 1100 webcam for 29.03.09) there were late snowfalls for good late season ski ing.

It is the Mont Blanc effect which makes the snow in the this area of Morillon and Samoens so reliable year after year. This is the view from the webcam from the top of Flaine looking back to the village and the mountains down the valley on the 17.3.09. Even late in the season there is often enough snow to guarantee good skiing conditions and after the first week in March, there are no crowds as well.

Snow record for Grand Massif

Following 2006/2007 which had been the worst year in the last 10 for snow in the western Alps, things improved for 2007/2008. In 2007/2008 the first snow fell in November and there was snow all the way to Morillon village for Christmas and New Year. There was very little snow during January to just past the middle of February, but plenty of skiing on the upper slopes in cold winter sunshine day after day. The snow became a little thin on the
ground at 1100m, but all the links remained open. Then the snow started falling again and it was possible to ski down to Morillon village even in the last week in March 2008. The ski season in Flaine was extended a week until April 25th because there was so much snow!

2008/2009 was a very good season with snow down to Morillon village to the middle of March and regular top ups of snow to ensure optimal skiing for the whole season.  It started snowing in November, see photo from the webcam on the left from Morillon hill down to the chalet. Even in the warmth of the spring sun at the end of the season, the skiing was very enjoyable, with 15 cm of fresh snow in Flaine and the top of Morillon on 17th April. The links remained open to the end of the season. Cascades ski piste remained open until the beginning of April. The Marvel ski run was open until the Wednesday of the last week of the season.
